Art and Design

Intent 

At Gosbecks we believe that all children are artists and therefore art should be a vital part of children’s education. Our vision is for all children to be given opportunities to gain knowledge and skills in art. The Art and Design Curriculum will develop children’s critical abilities, as well as an understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists. They will also explore their own ideas by experimenting and creating their own works of art, using a wide range of materials, media and techniques. 

Implementation 

The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each art topic are mapped clearly across each year group and are progressive throughout the school. 

Art is often taught within the themes of the class topic allowing them to make links with art across subjects e.g. symbols in R.E 

A systematic approach to the development of artistic skills means that children are given opportunities to express their creative imagination, as well as practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing, textiles/collage, 3D form and digital media.  

Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape and form) will be developed within the curriculum and built on as they go through the school. 

Teachers support learning through effective lesson sequencing and clear progression between year groups. 

Children will learn about different artists, craft makers and designers and be exposed to their work through quality pictures or gallery visits. They will then use the artists' work, imitating their style, or as inspiration using an assortment of different media.  

The introduction of sketch books means that children can explore, review, modify and develop their initial ideas in order to build their confidence to achieve high quality outcomes. 

Impact 

Children at Gosbecks Primary School enjoy their art lessons and are proud of their work. Their work is celebrated by being put on display around the school. Children learn to understand and apply the key principles of art and are given the opportunity to refine and develop their techniques over time. Through art provision at Gosbecks we believe the children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to enable them to progress with their love of art in Secondary school and beyond.
